I Play Every Day Of My Life

Neil Gaiman quote

Bloganuary prompt: Do you play in your daily life? What says “playtime” to you?

When I was trying to wrap my head around this one, I searched all the regular dictionary sites for a definition of “play“. Why did I need to do this? Well, I think in my life the boundary between “Play” and the rest of my life is fluid, so I was trying to find something more concrete to help me.
My search did not come up with a satisfactory result.

So, since it is 2024 I asked the AI bot.

The term “play” can have multiple meanings depending on the context. Here are a few possible definitions:
Activity for Enjoyment: Play can refer to an activity engaged in for enjoyment, recreation, or amusement. This can include various forms of games, sports, or other leisure activities.
Engagement in an Activity: Play can describe the engagement in a particular action or process, such as the play of light and shadow or the play of ideas in a discussion.
The specific meaning of “play” depends on the context in which the term is used.

Did that help? Maybe.

What I am struggling with is the definition of “play time” as opposed to the rest of my life.
Let’s first eliminate the time spent at employed work. Although there have been fun parts in all the jobs I have had. Even going to and from work seems like play because I take my bicycle to work. That often seems like playing sports.

Next may be the time spent facilitating life. Like chores, shopping, cleaning, laundry, and so on.
But when it comes to cooking and baking the lines get blurred for me. Yes, it is my responsibility to prepare nutritious meals for us but most of the time that does feel like play.

Is time spent learning play-time? Is time spent in meditation? Is walking the dog play-time?

Finally, let’s just pick something that is definitely play: Art

Half a drawing of Frithjof

As mentioned in my post yesterday I started drawing and am quite enjoying it. It is learning and it is playing.

One indication that art qualifies as play-time, is the fact that my otherwise very busy mind it totally focused on the task. It is easier to get into “the zone” when I create art.

I figured it out – drawing time is play-time.
